The Talk - part 1
A little under ten minutes we sat there.
At exactly the determined time, I stood up and started talking.
"ODS-N is more than growing plants according to Natural Ways"
I let that sink in.
"The N in ODS-N stands for Natural, you know, so there is a strong connection to Natural Ways, yet it is more, as it puts man inside of Nature, not above, below, apart from..."
"Whereas Natural Ways is a reaction, ODS-N is a way of thinking that is far wider than growing plants."
The first glazed looks started appearing. I knew them. they were the ones that would, soon, be turning around, being hushed by others, who would get invigorated, who would recognize things that they themselves hadn't been able to express as such.
"ODS-N ends with Nature. Everything boils back to Nature. But to Nature ànd man."
"ODS-N..." I paused.
If I repeated it only a few more times, repetition would its trick and the word would stuck in their brians...
So, I repeated it once more
"ODS-N starts with Observe. Keep your fucking thinker quiet. Stop interpreting, analysis is for later. Just watch. Listen. Take a step back and observe, pull yourself away from it. Smell, if possible, touch, taste. Make drawings, songs, create texts and lists, tables and charts, maps, lengthy descriptions, whatever you need, but stick to the data."
"What is there now? Where do you want it to go? What resources do you have? When do you have them? What are the boundaries in your site/situation? What are starting conditions? What are side-conditions?"
"As"
"Much"
"As"
"Possible..."
I stressed every single word, as part of what I was saying was nothing was strict, not even the base thought, ODS-N.
"Yes, ODS-N can serve as a baseline to which you can return. You don't know what to do next? Observe. Diversity&Design. Systems. Nature."
"So, we had Observe and Nature. Then, only then, do we enter Analysis, by means of Systems. One of the things we Observe, is functions. What there is to do. If a system is a group of elements interacting, functions is what that group can do, externally as well as internally. Functions are performed by Systems. And Systems are composed of Elements. That is the next thing to do: Find the Systems in the Observations. Observations of Nature to get inspired."
Again I paused, the inspired by Nature, these Natural Ways, they had quite a few useful techniques, but their vision - Nature only - sucked. Besides, If you took their solutions and added a small human aspect, they often improved - significantly. Yet, I look at Nature as Man+Nature. Broader.
"If possible, use Diversity. Diversity in Observation. In Mapping. Diversity in number of Functions an Element performs ànd in number of Elements that perform a Function. The different ways to get electricity, to get water, to get to food..."
"And use Design. Design results in a map-in-time from 'where you are nów?' to 'where do you want to go?' including implementation, maintenance, update and support processdescriptions and playbooks.
Make mistakes on paper and in your head."
